DISCLAIMER: I am new to these forums and this site entirely, so I'm not entirely sure if questions like this are where they belon

For the past 2 months or so, I've been slowly working on a tactic-based TCG. I've recently hit a snag in the road with what units (creatures) I'd like to use in it.

I've chosen between

Monsters (elemental monsters like in most tcg's)

Dinosaurs and Dragons (some have elements, some don't. Many variants & such)

Now, both of these concepts are great, but I can only choose one. Both of which have pros and cons:

Dino pros:

-pretty original (as far as I know)

-suites gameplay and card designs

-Dinosaurs are just rad overall

Dino cons:

-They are much harder to to artwork for than you'd think

-very limited idea, special varients could only go so far

-could be boring to some, depending on preferences

Monster Pros:

-easy to draw and concept when you're lazy

-There's thousands of monsters one could make

-I love monsters and I've made hundreds

Monster Cons:

-Monsters are pretty unoriginal (in TCG's, I mean)

-Having monsters would interfere with another story of mine (it's about monsters and I can't combine the two, I've tried)

-I have no ideas for playstyles, and how the cards would look

This is my predicament.

I wanted to hear the peoples' opinion on the matter, what do you think I should do? Would Monsters, or Dinosaurs/Dragons would better? Would you play a game with either?

I'm not sure if you can comment but if you can feel free

until next time,

if you'd like to read some ideas I made for the game, here's the link to the giant Google doc I made

In truth, it's best to research the market you are shooting for and see how many similar games use monsters or dinosaurs, and IMHO - go for the one that is in the MINORITY, rather than over-saturate the market.

I'm a book author, and it doesn't matter how great your manuscript is - if you write the world's greatest research book on 'Obscure Battles of the Zanzu-Scroobi War of 1547' and there are already 12 books on the same subject, it's a sure bet no one is going to read your book.

I too feel that game themes in recent years have been oversaturated with monsters/zombies, while dinos peaked long ago and aren't as common. If you're worried about not having enough varieties, you can always invent new types, or widen the scope to include other (possibly invented) prehistoric creatures.

Every game I've seen that had a dinosaur theme mixed dinos of different periods, so it's not like there's a high standard of biological/paleontological accuracy you need to meet.

Then why not both? Why not monster dinosaurs?

Possibilities are endless, pick a monster type and apply to a dinosaur type that could fit, eg the pterodactylus or similar could be a vampire. The vampirodactylus, the tricerberus, the T-rextein, the zombieraptor... And that's playing with common types/names, the limit is your imagination.

Just some food for thought.

I've actually thought a lot of doing stuff like that, the end result made me very happy.

I think I'll stick to a thought similar to that, but everyone has helped out so, so much on this project. Thank you all so much for the advice and feedback!
