Contest semi-finals?

Dear TGC people,

first of all i want to thank you for providing this helpful and fun way of creating and sharing games, and for having such a great community, i also want to thank for giving the opportunity to creators to make and sell games and for doing contests, wich is a very exciting way to create games and push for ideas.

I've been very excited of participating and doing semi-finals in the last gamehole "take that" contest, but this time my trip finished there.

I'm glad to see that the games that made to finals are all (except one) games that i voted for and i think they deserve to be there (congratulations to all!). Sadly, others that i thought they will succes didn't make into finals (i'm specially thinking on deadline saloon)

but...my question is: what is the point of having semi-finals? i can't understand what is the difference between qualify on them and not qualify at all, specially since not qualified can go to finals (i'm glad "you've been hacked made it", i voted for it too).

I thought semi-finals games would be tested and or played by judges, reviewed (for good or bad), or at least valued in the game review part, but i think none of this has made in this phase.

Please correct me if i'm wrong or answer me if you can say what differnece makes to be on semi-finals.

thank you very much.

The entire process is laid out in detail here: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/help/game-design-contests

Thank you very much, this clears a lot of things i didn't know.

There are a few things that doesn't fit with reality thought:

"Each vote costs 10 crafter points (or 20 if you are a community curator; 20 means curator votes have more weight)"

This time voting costed 0 points (except at the very beggining of the contest)

"If they feel it necessary, judges are permitted to add extra games to the semi-finalist list from those that were not selected by the community"

At least one game should have been added in the semi-finals this time prior to pass to the finals

"They'll also review the download the rules and read them for clarity, beauty, style, and fun.  Each judge typically produces a spreadsheet of their scoring system of the 20 finalists along with some brief comments about each game."

Thats what i meant when i talked about a minimum review. It would be great if we could see any comment or info about the judges concerning the games to this point, so people who did the game and get to semi-finals can get an idea of what did they do well or wrong, and people interested in other semi-finalist can get this idea from other games too.

Thank you very much for your attention, you do great work.

The take that contest was sponsored by Gamehole Con, adn the sponsors requested that the voting be free for this contest, since the people in the Gamehole community might not have Crafter Points to vote with. This was an exception to the rule. In general, contests do require you to pay 10 Crafter Points per vote.

After the semi finalists arew selected, the judges choose finalists, and they may select a game that did not make it to the semi finals (as happened in this case). Technically, You've Been Hacked was added to the semi-finalists, but that happened at the same time as the finalists were announced, since it's all part of the same process. Although I do think that the help page should say that "judges are permitted to select a finalist from the games not selected by the community" since that would be more clear.

Often judges do produce a spreadsheet with their initial impressions when selecting finalists, but that is not required of the judges.

Thank you very much for your response.

Everything is clear now.

I didn't want to say they haven't done the work of reviewing/scoring the games. I Just wanted to point out that it would be helpful and rewarding to have this feedback, and that this would add a difference between being semi-finalist and not being qualified.

Keep the good job, and thanks again.

Hi all,

Just wanted to throw my two cents in on the Survival Challenge. I got the impression from reading the Survival Challenge page that all entries were going to be judged solely by - well - the judge.  The semifinals voting process blindsided me a little - in retrospect, I wish there had been a link to the overall Game Contest rules from the contest page, rather than finding it later on buried in the FAQs.

While the overall process is reasonable, I can't help feeling that site newcomers are at a disadvantage in a popularity-based contest.  It's all about how many people you know and how many friends you can get to vote for your game.

On the whole, though, it was fun!  I will definitely keep on trying and developing games here.  Thanks for giving me a chance to comment.  Huzzah for the finalists!  Well done all!
